Cultural Fascism

Frankfurt: Grand Royal Cultural Budapest Hotel Abyss, London

20 Mar - 20 Jun 2023

In anticipation of its permanent display at Frankfurt: Grand Royal Cultural Budapest Hotel Abyss, London, this exhibition presents a single work that relates to the 2011 Norway attacks committed by neo-Nazi Anders Behring Breivik upon a left-wing Labour Party's youth organisation during their annual summer camp on the small island of Utøya in lake Tyrifjorden.

22 July is a small diorama that depicts the lake and the landing for the ferry Breivik used to travel to the island.

Before his actions on 22 July, Breivik sent a 1,500-page 'manifesto' to over a thousand email addresses. He later admitted that much of it was produced by cutting and pasting from elsewhere, including parts that appear to have been copied directly from terrorist Ted Kaczynski's manifesto - replacing the word 'leftist' with the phrase 'cultural Marxist'. During the attacks, Breivik repeatedly shouted "You are going to die today, Marxists!"

Empty of people, the work recalls - and also distinguishes itself from - the infamous miniature depictions of hell by artists Jake and Dinos Chapman.
