How Long Can A Man Stay Silent?

Capponi Library, Florence

21 Jun - 22 Sep 2018

‘An artwork is … a desecration of silence.’

For the remainder of Duchamp’s life, after he decided to take a break from painting his 'Large Glass' in 1923, his activity reduced to little more than breathing. This exhibition is pleased to announce that on the 21st of June, he will come out of retirement and return to public life.

It takes as its point of departure a schematic differentiation between the work of Duchamp and Jasper Johns, who was famously critical of Duchamp’s silence, and who once produced 'Painting Bitten by a Man' (1961).

This exploration takes the form of a mediation via the specific incarnation of the fictional character 'Dr. Hannibal Lecter' as depicted in Ridley Scott’s Hannibal (2001), which presents him in a contradictory way as an embodiment of the idea of a ’Renaissance man’ - also called Universal Man, embodying the tenets of Renaissance Humanism (the revival in the study of classical antiquity),

This contradiction is epitomised in the character's rule that whenever possible, ‘one should always try to eat the rude’ - exemplifying  humanistic standards of civility in the very act that emblematizes barbarity: cannabilism.

The idea of a ‘Renaissance man’ as a person with many talents or areas of knowledge is then figured as an anticipation of art as a transdisciplinary concept in global contemporary modernity today.
